Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting times in your life. Preconception care should begin four to twelve months prior to conception. Dr. Ofek works closely with women prior to pregnancy to ensure their immune and nervous system are functioning optimally for a healthy pregnancy. More than just a treatment for low back pain, many mothers have come to recognize the vital role that Chiropractic care plays in a healthy pregnancy.
A properly functioning spine and nervous system is an important part of a wellness pregnancy. Whether or not to see a Chiropractor during pregnancy is one of the most important decisions an expectant mother will make. Pregnancy is an important time for nerve impulses to flow uninterrupted from the brain to all the parts of the body including the uterus for proper neurological development of your baby. Dr. Ofek works with midwives, obstetricians and doulas to help ensure that Mom is receiving the best care for her and her developing baby.
In addition to the noticeable changes your pregnancy will cause your body, pregnancy can also cause subtle changes in the musculoskeletal system; changes your Chiropractor is able to detect and correct. The position of your growing baby will cause your center of gravity to shift and your spine will naturally alter itself to accommodate this change. As a result, you may experience low back and pelvic pain. The increase in hormones during pregnancy can also cause muscles, ligaments, cartilage and even bones to “soften” and become more pliable. Pelvic bones may even become displaced or fixated. Since your hips will need to spread to accommodate the delivery of your baby, fixated pelvic bones can lead to complications during delivery.
It’s especially important during pregnancy for nerve impulses to flow from your brain to all parts of your body. A slightly out-of-place vertebra can create nerve irritation, which can interfere with your body’s nervous system. Unwanted symptoms such as sciatica, lower back pain, pubic bone pain, and middle back discomfort during pregnancy can be alleviated by prenatal chiropractic care. By using special or modified techniques during your pregnancy, Dr. Ofek can restore the function of your nervous system, improve your overall wellness and increase your comfort during your pregnancy and delivery.
In fact, research has proven that:
During your pregnancy, your Family Wellness Chiropractor can do the following: 1.Gentle adjustments can correct vertebral misalignment and relieve nerve interference. 2.Help properly align the pelvic bones which can contribute to a shorter and easier delivery. 3.Restore the natural position and mobility of the sacrum and pelvic joints. 4.Reduce nerve interference to the mother’s nervous system which controls all of her systems and functions. 5.Decrease the probability of abnormal fetal position during the last trimester.
Prenatal chiropractic care should include evaluation with the Webster Technique. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that helps to reduce bony restrictions and relax the supporting ligaments to the uterus which allows the baby to get in the best possible position for birth. Typically, the Webster Technique is utilized on all pregnant women beginning around 28 weeks to ensure proper position of the baby and to facilitate an easier labor and delivery. Dr. Ofek has been certified in the Webster Technique and routinely uses the technique on all pregnant patients.
Many mothers report back to their Chiropractors that regular spinal adjustments helped them feel healthier during their pregnancy, decreased morning sickness, facilitated shorter labor and delivery times, and increased an overall sense of well-being.
Speak with Dr. Ofek today, if you are pregnant or considering conceiving. Just as the decision to use a doula or midwife can affect your overall childbirth experience, so can your nutrition, exercise and spinal health. Dr. Ofek is dedicated to providing you with the absolute best in family wellness care and specializes in the care of pregnant women and is certified in the Webster Technique.
Why the emphasis on children?
I find it incredibly concerning and unacceptable that kids in this country are sicker than ever before. Not only that our kids are sicker but they are also more medicated than ever before in our modern history. It simply does not make sense to me and honestly breaks my heart. As a parent, there is nothing more stressful and upsetting than seeing your child suffering. We have gotten so used to thinking within the box, accepting the “reality” and not look for other means of intervention. I am here to tell you that not only chiropractic can help your child but also that it could improve their health dramatically in ways you did not even allowed yourself to imagine. Most parents, unfortunately, accepted that their child will never be as healthy or vital as their peers, simply because that’s what our society allowed them to believe. My practice is a place of hope, a place where we are focused on solutions not problems, possibilities not impossibilities. You will always feel inspired and motivated to keep moving forward and most important you will always be listened to. As parents, we simply want somebody to assure us that we are not alone and that you we have someone in your corner to support you along this journey. I am here for you and your family and it will be my honor and privilege to care for you and your loved ones.
Some Facts
Chiropractic is all about the nervous system and making sure it is functioning at a 100% all of the time so we can live the life we were meant to. When our nervous system (Brain, spinal cord and delicate nerves) are injured due to trauma (physical, emotional, chemical) the function in our body and our ability to stay healthy is reduced dramatically. The first trauma we sustain happens during the birth process and is called “Traumatic Birth Syndrome” (TBS). Traumatic birth syndrome happens to 80%-90% of all births today and is a major contributor to most pediatric health issues we are familiar with and help in our practice on a daily basis:
Developmental delays
Anxiety
Depression
Seizures
ADHD, Dyslexia
Autism
Digestion issues
Sleeping Problems
Learning Disorders
Behavioral issues
Torticollis
Ear infections
Asthma
Reflux / Colic
Plagiocephaly
Lip/Tongue Tie
Scoliosis
Immune system issues
Children are our future, literally, if not starting with them so who should we start with? Or when should we start? When parents realize how much trauma (Physical, Emotional and Chemical) a child sustains during the birth process and even prior to birth they can’t wait to start care in my office. Parents want chiropractic care for their child not because something is wrong, but because they want to optimize their health and wellbeing and prevent any future health issues (the ones we all see as adults). A growing child sustains thousands of falls, injuries and other traumas by the time they are three years old. Actually, a child’s brain undergoes an amazing period of development from birth to three – producing more than a million neural connections each second. Between conception and age three, a child’s brain undergoes an impressive amount of change. At birth, it already has about all of the neurons it will ever have.
It doubles in size in the first year, and by age three it has reached 80% of its adult volume. (http://www.urbanchildinstitute.org/why-0-3/baby-and-brain).
One of the greatest benefits of Chiropractic care for infants/ kids is proper brain and nervous system development.
Why an Infant’s spine should be checked regularly by a chiropractor
By the time children have reached 4 years of age they have fallen literally thousands of times. Just like adults, children’s spines are made of individual vertebrae that can get misaligned resulting in pressure on nerves, spinal cord and may lead to long term damage. Additional causes to spinal subluxations could be: Birth trauma (difficult delivery, forceps, vacuum, C- section), improper baby carrying, and excessive time in car seats can that cause dangerous spinal misallignments that present as common newborn health complaints such as:
Developmental delays, torticullis, Plagiocephaly (assymetrical skull).
Colic
Reflux
Earaches
Excessive Crying
Breastfeeding, dysfunction, latching issues
Toddlers/Young Children
As our children grow and become toddlers; learning how to walk, repeated injuries and falls, childhood sports and playground falls can cause dangerous spinal subluxations in young children that may cause:
Scoliosis
Bed-Wetting
Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ADHD, ADD, Autism. etc.)
Asthma
Allergies
Teenagers
In their teenage years, children are at the last stage of spinal development, things like poor posture, wearing heavy backpacks, and playing contact sports may cause a multitude of conditions like:
Headaches
Poor Posture
Scoliosis
PMS
ADD/ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Depression, Anxiaty
Chiropractic care may prevent many of these condition and provide an optimal development and health for your child throughout his life.
What is ADD/ADHD?
Developmental disorder is often the reason of an imbalance between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, in particular a weakness of the right side of the brain compared to the left side. This often occurs as the result of a delay in development of specific areas of the brainstem and right cortex during normal development or often due to injury to the right hemisphere of the brain which causes a delay in functioning on that side. The definition or terms ADD/ADHD are all related to the same right brain imbalance but with different presentations or symptoms. A child with ADD/ADHD will can often be described as a happy and outgoing child, curious and impulsive, fearless, has difficulties with non-verbal communication (eye contact, facial expression), great in verbal communication. Kids with ADD/ADHD may have difficulties in completing tasks but great in planning them. They may have difficulties with being aware of the world around them or the “big picture”.
Chiropractic Care and ADD/ADHD:
We will start by doing an in-depth physical examination and a thorough review of birth, infancy, and mother’s history during pregnancy, family history, as well as any relevant information up to the day of the examination. We will than determine the specific care that patient needs and present the report of finding to the family and start care according to the recommendations we provide. Additional exercises to accommodate our progress may be given to the child as homework.
